Nasal Remedy for Runners

Thursday I took class one of my five-week hatha yoga session. I came home after class indifferent. It wasn’t the best class I’ve ever taken. But it also could have been worse. I left feeling challenged physically, and relaxed mentally. So in that area it was a success.

The style of the class is what surprised me as it was unlike the hatha yoga I took in Fort Wayne. For most of the time I felt more like I was taking a pilates class, than yoga. It’s only five weeks. It’s not like I signed up for a lifetime membership so I’m going to give it some more time before making a final opinion. The classes I am taking are at one of the local YMCA branches and were a mere fraction of the cost of the yoga studios in Cleveland.

Nasal Remedy for Runners

Outside of starting yoga classes again, I have been trying something new for about five days — a neti pot. The first time I heard of one of these I completely disregarded the idea, thinking it was weird. That was before I started taking a Claritin pill daily — and I have been for about five months. Frankly I’m disgruntled. I don’t like relying on pills for nasal issues and it’s October now so why do I still have issues? So I turned to the neti pot after reading rave reviews and hearing that everyone who tried it “never turned back.”

It has helped my sinuses – but only temporarily. I’ve been using it daily but after about 12-hours my nasty nasal issues return (clogged sinus and mucus). So do I start using it twice a day? Like brushing my teeth?

Nasal Remedy for Runners

Why am I writing about this? Because easy breathing is important, especially for running and yoga. Maybe someone else will benefit from hearing about a potential natural remedy to sinus issues. The verdict so far is I’d rather use the neti pot daily than take a pill.

I’ve always wondered how well the neti pot works. Like you, I haven’t tried it because it just seems a little weird. BUT I think if I was having enough issues I’d try anything!

Is it just water that you use in it? If so, I don’t see why you couldn’t use it twice a day. Hey, if it helps you breathe! There’s no worse feeling than not being able to breathe well. (well except maybe being nauseous. I’d take trouble breathing over that anyway).

Emily you use a saline solution in it so water and a tiny bit of salt added. I have been using distilled water opposed to tap.

Just saw your comment! Wanted to stop in and say hello to a fellow new clevelander! I’m originally from the area…where did you grow? What part of town are you from? I’m on the east side!

Ah! I grew up in Toledo. Living west side of Cleve now. Just moved here about 4 weeks ago after a stint of living in Indiana. It feels good to be home in Ohio!

I am too lazy to look up how much yoga classes are at the Y but I go to Inner Bliss in Rocky River somethimes. THey have a donation class where you can donate whatever.
I have not tried the neti pot yet but I hear good things about it for the most part.

So, have you thought about becoming a yoga instructor? It’s the way to find the classes you like 🙂

Also, I love my neti pot!!!!

To be honest, it has crossed my mind before. Not recently though. I guess it’s one of those “maybe in 10 years” kind of things. Haha.

The neti pot seems to be working better for me now too. Like my nose is getting more used to the routine!
