How to Sell on Poshmark Step by Step Guide

Right now is a great time for spring cleaning. Poshmark offers an easy way to sell clothing items you no longer need or wear. Poshmark is an app available for Apple or Android devices that allows users to easily list their gently used or new with tags clothing items and accessories for sale online. Today I’m sharing step by step how to sell on Poshmark.

I joined Poshmark in 2017 at the urging of a friend who know I loved to shop secondhand. My first action was actually to make a purchase – I found and purchased a gently used wrap around robe. It wasn’t until a few months later that I decided to try selling a few of my items. When my items sold I was able to use the money I earned to buy new pieces for my wardrobe.

What is Poshmark?

Poshmark is a social selling marketplace all accessible via the palm of your hand in an app (now accessible via desktop too!). Users are called “Poshers” and offer clothing for sale via a virtual “closet.”

It only takes a few minutes to list an item on Poshmark. Buyers pay shipping and once sold, Poshmark will deposit the cash for clothes directly into your PayPal account. This is my selling on Poshmark review.

Selling on Poshmark is Easy

One thing I like about Poshmark is it’s easy to both buy and sell on the app. In fact you can list an item for sale in just a few minutes. The instructions today will show images from the Apple version of the app. You can also sign up for Poshmark directly online via web browser (poshmark.com) and buy and sell items from the Poshmark login web browser.

Sign Up for a Free Poshmark Account

If you haven’t joined Poshmark yet the first step is to download the app to your phone and sign up for an account. When you sign up you will need to create a username (just like a social media handle), a password and enter some basic information such as your name and the city you live in.

Fill Out Your Profile

Next you can fill out additional information about yourself to add a little more color and personality to your profile. This is not required, however, when people are shopping they like to see your face and know a little bit about you.

Poshmark users are shopping primarily secondhand items, although new with tags items can also be sold on the app. They tend to shop for the experience of buying from another individual versus a corporation, shop to reuse and to find items that are no longer made or difficult to find.

Additional information includes uploading a profile photo of yourself, a header image (just like having a header image on Facebook) and filling out the About page for your Poshmark account.

How to List an Item for Sale

How to use Poshmark? Now that all of your information is filled out you might want to try listing your first item for sale. Hopefully you have gone through your closet already and found a few clothing items you no longer use or wear. Take up to eight photos of your item.

It’s a good idea to take a photo of the front and back of the item, the label, the materials tag, the size of the item and some Poshmark users also like to take photos of measurements.

It helps to have natural light and a clear (non-distracting) background for your photos. Next upload your photos. You can rearrange the photos and flip them from side to side. I don’t recommend using any filters so that any shoppers see the item for truly how it looks and not distorted in any way.

Describe Your Item

Next you will be asked to fill out an item title. I like to include the brand name of the item, the name of the item itself any describing factors such as color, style and size.

Try to use as many characters as possible. Then you will fill out the description box. Again be as thorough as possible here and use up as many characters as you can.

Also include additional information about the item such as the fit (loose or fitted), the style, interesting features, the colors, how you might wear or use the item and most importantly the condition of the item. Do not try to deceive your buyers. 100% honestly is best!

Lastly you will need to fill in a few more fields for the item such as name brand, type of garment, size and color. These fields are important to fill out because they help shoppers find your item.

Pricing and Fees on Poshmark

The final step when selling on Poshmark is to enter a price for your item. Poshmark requires you enter the original or retail price. If you do not know this you can guess or put $0.

I prefer to put $0 if I do not know as I do not want to be deceptive in any way. Then below that you enter the price you wold like to sell the item for.

Poshmark will take a fee of 20 percent of the sale price of your item so keep this in mind when pricing (the buyer will pay for their own shipping). Also remember Poshmark, buyers can buy your item outright or send you an offer (a price lower than you asked). You are all done!

Tap the List button and your item will officially be listed for sale! I hope this was helpful to teach you how to use Poshmark.

Shipping Your Item and Receiving Payment

When one of your items sells, either outright or via an offer, you will need to ship your item. Poshmark will email you a PDF label for the item. Attach this label to a USPS Priority Mail box or envelope (or you can also reuse a clean envelope or box you already have or use your own unmarked shipping supplies).

Place the item in the package, label it and drop it in any USPS blue postal box or directly at your local post office.

Once your item arrives at the buyer’s address and they accept the package your money will be released to your Poshmark account. You can request the money by direct deposit or check.

Or if you leave the money in your Poshmark account you can use it on your next Poshmark purchase. Now that you are on the Poshmark app I encourage you to click around, try tapping different buttons and simply exploring the app.

You can follow other closets, share items from other closets and like items to save them for later. Poshmark is a very social application much like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter).

  1. Hi there,
Thank you for the information. I am a retired event professional and former Director level Hotel and Convention Center executive.
With that being said, I have a huge wardrobe filled with suits , jackets , separates , cocktail sparkle pieces- sizes are 20– 24 mostly Jones of New York. and Nordstrom’s or Dillards. Private labels. My question is do th e Posh mark. Shoppers have a need For these types of items?

    • Hello, sometimes I try looking up my item first on Poshmark to see if it’s worth selling. You can look the item up then sort by sold items only to see what price it sold for. If for any reason you don’t think the items will sell there may I suggest a donation to an organization such as Dress for Success? They often need business attire.

  2. Hello: I am a seller on Poshmark, however, I find it really really hard to find out when someone BUYS something from me. I don’t get an alert. Instead,I have to constantly visit my site and click around it a bit to find out if someone actually wants to buy my items. Why doesn’t the Poshmark drop-down menu have something called “Buyer Request” or something like that instead of “Offers.” Is it just me? Or is there an easier way to find out if you’ve made a sale? thanks.

    • Hello! I would suggest checking your notification settings within the app or on desktop (you can do this from either). If you are using the mobile app you can set it up to give you a badge, or alert for sales so you see an alert on your device. When in the app all sales appear under the ORDERS tab. You can also adjust your Poshmark email settings to be alerted to various types of activity on your account. When you do sell an item Poshmark will send you an email with the shipping label. Also check your email spam settings to make sure Poshmark emails are not going into your spam folder. I hope this helps!

  3. I am new to Poshmark and I have one question about posting. I have a few shirts that are almost new and quite nice. They are similar but not the same. Is there some way to list them all on the same post giving a potential buyer the ability to choose only one. How would I mark each shirt so it is identifiable to a buyer and I know which one to send. They are all the same price.
    Thank you

    • Hello, if the items are exactly the same you can create one listing with multiple items in multiple sizes. If they are different, however, you should create a listing for each item. I would assign an inventory number to each item so you can keep track of each one. Hope this helps!

  4. HI
I’ve been on Poshmark since last fall and my question is how do you make the sale sign ex. say all $5 items are 3 for $10…or the signs where they say “bundle and save”. Is there an app for that??

    Thanks for your help!

    • Hello, I do not use any signs in my Poshmark closet but from what I understand people make the signs using apps or websites such as Canva or PicMonkey or Photoshop. Then you add the image to your closet like you would a listing and mark it not for sale. Hope this helps!

    • Hello, Yes I am still selling and happy with the process and app. I don’t think anything has changed with the Poshmark selling process since I wrote the article. If you have any specific questions I am happy to help. Thanks for reading!

  5. I can’t sell anything on Poshmark to save my life. I don’t know how you guys make it look this easy. No matter what I do or how hard I try, I can never make a sell.

    • Hi Nafia, I’m sorry to hear selling has been rough for you on Poshmark. There are a lot of factors that can play into it such as what items you have, if they are high demand, your price points, photos and sharing your items frequently (to market them to buyers). I joined in June and did not sell my first item until August so it can take some time as well. I’m not sure how long you have been on the platform. If you have any specific questions please let me know!

  6. What happens if the buyer claims the item didn’t arrive although the tracking number says it was delivered? That has happened a few times on eBay and they covered it not me!! Do you have to take returns? Thanks for info

    • Hi Suki: Good question. I would leave the ball in the buyer’s court. They can file a case with Poshmark if they choose, and then a Poshmark rep will resolve the matter – making it mostly hands off for you. I had one sale where I was contacted in such a fashion and then shortly after the buyer found the package on their doorstep… so it could also be a matter of timing of delivery. Regarding returns, Poshmark is mostly a no returns policy platform so I do not worry about that much at all. The only time a return might happen is if you make an honest mistake on describing your item, and a case would need to be filed to even start this process. But again a Poshmark rep needs to approve it. Hope this helps!

    • Hi Brenda – I use the Priority Mail Tyvek mailers because most of the items I have sold are small and I like that the mailers are lightweight and don’t take up a lot of space. If you want a box you can use the Priority Mail boxes as well, any size. According to Poshmark you can use the Flat Rate and Regional Boxes from USPS as well but I have not tried that myself. I order the mailers from the USPS Online Store, they are free. Hope this helps!

  8. This is so helpful! I’ve had a Poshmark account for ages, but I’ve never really used it. My sister-in-law is an avid thrifter, and she actually resells stuff she finds on Poshmarks. She’s made quite a bit of money doing it, too!
