From time to time I have seen the word “athlete” referenced on blogs written by folks like myself who enjoy fitness. I have used the word in general terms, but never directly call myself one.
Do I consider myself an athlete?
My gut reaction is no, although it would be nice to think I am!
I participate in competitive sport (road races), but I have no coach and no formal training. I was definitely not athletic as a child, and I’m pretty sure I will never attend the Olympics as a competitor. When I think of the term athlete I visualize professional sports players, collegiate players and Olympians.
But if I’m not an athlete, then what am I? A runner? But where does that leave me if I’m not running? A fitness person? That just sounds silly. Or maybe I am an athlete, and just selling myself short. Let’s open this up to some discussion.
Do you consider yourself an athlete? Why or why not?
If not, then who is an athlete?
